 MEDIA RELEASE
 30 OCTOBER 1998
 IMMEDIATE
 TUBERCULOSIS IN THE EASTERN CAPE

The department of Agriculture and Land Affairs is highly disturbed by reports that it is not doing something to eradicate Tuberculosis in
the Province.

We want to place on record that we have a TB Eradication Campaign that was launched at Peddie on the 1st of April 1997 and will run until
31st March 1999.

To date 486 herds of cattle with a total number of cattle being 30 326, have already been tested. The fear by the game farmers that they
fear that their animals will be infected with TB from cattle especially around the district of Peddie.

We agree that the major outbreak is from Peddie and some other reported incidents from Zwelitsha and Middledrift districts.

From Peddie alone which is the major concern of the game farmers has to date had 74 cattle herds tested (14094 cattle) have been tested and
141 positive animals were slaughtered at the East London Abbatoir.
